Stein - Waternish & Gallery
February
2010
Welcome to the 'new' name 'SKYE-STAINED-GLASS.COM' If you think you've been here before---well you must have visited the 'old' site, which is great. The
old one (www skyeglass.com), although nice and snappy, did not convey, that the glass in question was actually Stained
Glass, ie handcrafted stained glass creations. The
more we thought about it, the more it sounded like 'autoscreen' or such like.
I have been invited
to sell my stained glass through Dandelion Designs Gallery, www.dandelion-designs.co.uk at Stein and now have a number of pieces on display/for sale. Stein is on the Waternish Pensinsula, Isle of Skye, it
is a lovely photographic little place right on Loch Bay.

Frost on Post
Skye has been extremely white this winter. Snow started
in mid-December and although we did not have a great deal of snow afterwards, it stayed and stayed--- as the temperatures
kept well below zero, day and night: -10'C at night was the norm for a while --- almost unheard of on Skye.
It certainly was a white, icy and photogenic landscape. It was so cold, that some of the inland lochs were
completely frozen and the sea-lochs, like Loch Greshornish and Loch Dunvegan were frozen at the shallow end. Spectacular!
And of course, I was 'breaking the ice' regularly, sometimes 2x a day, for the chookies (chickens) and
wild birds. It was common to do that on the East Coast, but here?--- The chookies are laying well, even through all
the cold. The grass in their very large pen is very late to start growing this year,so their daily 'greens' consisted
of a cabbage, dangling from a hook. They attacked and ate them with great gusto! and No, no cabbage-flavoured eggs!
Whatever was left over from the cabbage was happily munched by our neighbour's Clydesdale 'baby' (almost 2 years
old). Sandi is the typical gentle giant. We have extended the pen for the chookies and they have about 1/4
acre. The new part has lots of grass, rosa rugosa and what is allegedly a 'Viking Burial Mound'. You
never know what might turn up there, with the hens scratching about!!
The sun seems to come out almost
every day, early afternoon, and the snowdrops, snowflakes & croci have all appeared in great drifts. And a welcome sight
they are. Spring is definitely round the corner.

Frozen Loch Dunvegan
Whilst showing all
our visitors/friends round, last year, 11 parties!!---no we don't do B&B---, we have discovered lots of 'new to
us' places. Their reason for coming to Skye, apart from seeing us, is that we live in such a beautiful and photogenic
area. No matter what the weather throws at you. Well, that is what they say, anyway. It is really surprising how much
there is to see and how many narrow and usually twisty roads there are to explore. The views are spectacular from every angle.
My new workroom is now completely finished, including a few plants!, so I have no excuse not to produce
lots of new and exciting items. The windows are on a level with the birds in the garden,
which is wonderful---however, it will mean, making a whole array of 'birdstrike' stained glass suncatchers. The workshop is not a gallery, but if you want to come and visit, please give us a ring and we may be able
to arrange it.
I have also become a member of SLACA ---Skye & Lochalsh Arts &
Crafts Association: www.skye-arts-crafts.co.uk. They produce a wonderful free booklet called 'Elements of Excellence', which is a Gallery & Studio Trails Guide
to Skye & Lochalsh. All being well, we should feature in the new edition. 'Elements
of Excellence' is due out before Easter and will be available through Tourist Information Centres (TIC), potteries, galleries,
shops and all the usual visitor/tourist outlets. The Portree TIC has showcases with examples
of work from SLACA members. Yes, the items are for sale from the TIC counter. Skye-Stained-Glass.com
shall also be on display very soon.
